I was reading something on this recently - from vague bits
lodged in the grey matter :
The IRE scale is in 10 segments, like the grey scale, So
the basic thrust was that you could use it to "place" a
reading on a particular zone by aligning EV reading against
the IRE scale numbers. That is, if you measure a highlight
you could use the 10 on the IRE as your setting, 1 for a
deepest tone - or somewhere in between. The IRE relates
directly to your range zones/stops.
Ah - it's in the Carl Shipman Pentax book. Above is correct.
Just set your EV reading to your desired Zone on the IRE
scale and you will have a direct relation of the zones from
that placement. The pointer at the 3.4 on the IRE relates to
"middle grey/average scene", but the scale can be used to
"shift" towrds shadow or highlight favored exposures.
My Shipman book is c. 1979 and covers MX - MESuper, 6x7,
K2/dmd/1000 and theAuto 110
