Here's a bizarre story:

I bought a lens from another list member last October. He mailed it to me
via USPS Priority Mail on October 19th, 2001. After 5 weeks or so of not
receiving the lens he was kind enough to send a refund and deal with the US
postal service himself.

Well, guess what? Yesterday, after 7 months, I received the lens. The box
was intact and showed no signs of damage.

I opened the box and removed the lens. I had my MX at work with me and
mounted the lens for a quick check. All I saw was black. Nothing, nada.
The glass was completely opaque.

I removed the front element and could barely see through it. Let's just say
that sunglasses could never be this dark.

The lens is a Vivitar Series 1 70-210/3.5 with VMC.

Could the postal service have done something to this lens to cause all the
lens elements to go extremely dark? Could some kind of irradiation or x-rays
or a chemical reaction cause the glass or coatings to fog?

Anybody have any ideas at all?

Thanks

Christian
