In the 1950s and ’60s, Elsa Dorfman picked up a camera and made a name for herself by taking pictures of her famous friends, like Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan and other members of the Village arts scene. Later, she switched to large format photography, using a towering and rare Polaroid camera that produced 20-by-24-inch portraits. They made her a local celebrity in Cambridge, Mass. This documentary from the director Errol Morris (“The Thin Blue Line <http://p.nytimes.com/email/re?location=pMJKdIFVI6pghfX2HXfSzxRpdoyDWYNWVwK+lth0xP4cXfS8kQbXJ6iJxyO+pDP2pl9MamVBM088IVChUqA5svFlTnaGeGg36nvFHdjyGU0aJqbt9XORlfKfStAjxC9kSIJHxqWZ8QC/dEdVvcAFP9+Np92IEVdc&campaign_id=16834&instance_id=102676&segment_id=112790&user_id=082ccc5c2454f619a643cd9119ca443d®i_id=80876318>”) juxtaposes interviews with Dorfman alongside her images — self-portraits, candid photos from Beat Generation parties and unused photos of her subjects, which she affectionately calls B-sides. The resulting movie is an engaging portrait of an artist and a reminder of how everyone just wants to keep pictures of the ones they love the most.
