Ok Jack, so what book are you using?
This is a very common bird back here in the east. , one I know in person
very well from years of watching them at a friends house north of the city.
Paul said "red breasted beauty" The actual name is Red-bellied - so
perhaps some confusion there.

I failed to find a solid match to
Paul's "Red-Breasted" image.
Age and gender related differences
complicate the choices.

Jack - that name always bothered me , but probably to distinguish from the
red-headed wood-pecker, name wise in addition to that faint reddishness on his
belly... This one I know well, but he also resembles the gila-woodpecker of
Arizona ...

Yes, although “Red Breasted” is the audubon name, the red crown is the
prominent feature. However, the breast does show a tinge of red. I have a
couple of pics, while not very attractive, show the red underside. I’ll post
one. https://www.photo.net/photo/18434556/Red-Breasted-Woodpecker

I agree it's a "beauty" but the red
I see is in the form of a scull cap.
Really nice catch, Paul!
