Interesting video, and a fascinating place.
St. Helena is not as remote as Easter Island is, but it's still far
away from the continents (and isolated), and it didn't have commercial
flights until just last month.

And if the cars were underpowered in 1960-s, one might wonder how Napoleon and his entourage were making it before and around 1820.

Cheers,

Igor

PS. I became curious about St. Helena, and found that they received a brand new airport just last year (finally, 74 years after the first consideration!), and the first commercial flight landed there just a month ago. So, it might be the right time to go there...
But you cannot make a weekend trip there: the flights are once a week.
:-)

In any case, read the somewhat controversial article at the bottom of this page: http://sainthelenaisland.info/flyhere.htm - about some realities of the Island. The myth about the roaming goats reminded me of the freely running troops of (domestic) horses on Easter Island, which I can confirm is true.

Hi Alan - I was company accountant for Solomon and Co, at that time the

This part of the island is the driest, but building there is encouraged by
government, and it is
only a five minute drive from Jamestown - or 4 minutes down Jacob's
Ladder
if you are brave enough!

Interesting. More civilized that I thought. What on earth did you do there
for 4 years? The
cinematographer's car was apparently a real rattletrap!

I think the car buffs here might appreciate this. The link leads to a short
video of a drive from
Jamestown to Half Tree Hollow, which was a large part of my daily drive to
and from work when I
lived on the island, 1967-69

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70pRc-004Kw

Road rules there included that cars coming down the hill had to give way to
those coming up - as, of
course, most of the cars at that time, being of English manufacture, were
under-powered!
My car was a 1966 Ford Zephyr, a bit more powerful than most.
