Eric,
you did well on that one.
This is an old "overpayment" scam.
You may want to read this detailed analysis of it, e.g. here:

And there are variations of it:

UPDATE: These guys got pretty frantic trying to get back in touch with
me. I let them accumulate about a dozen "missed calls" before picking up
again. I told them I was having problems with my cell phone and
suggested they call me back on my "land line”.
I’ve got a compact dryer on Craig’s List. Within a half-hour of posting I
received a text asking if it was still available and how much I wanted for
it. I said it was and the price was the price I’d asked—$100. Then the guy
said he didn’t live in the area, had arranged for a mover to pick up the
dryer, and would send me a certified check with extra money for *me* to
pay the mover and my trouble. When the check arrived I was to deposit it,
wait for it to clear, and then send a check to the “mover,” who will then
come to pick up the dryer.
I received a check for $1250.45—for a $100 dryer!. I tore it up and threw
it in the trash. The guy texted to see if I had received and deposited the
check. I said I had received it but had accidentally put it through my
shredder and asked him to send another one. I haven’t heard back from him.
If he sends another check and gets in touch with me again, I’m gonna tell
him that since he’s willing to pay 12 times what I asked for the dryer I’d
like *him* to pay the “mover."
There must be people who fall for these scams but it’s to understand how
they could.
