Tarantula is one of the fascinating creatures that I don't like much to be
close to. I haven't seen them in the wild, while we do get a few scorpions
here occasionally. (About half an year ago I found a tiny one dead on the
floor in the utility room. And long time before, I saw one or two in the
drive way.)
Thanks for the reference to brown recluse. I didn't know about them being
venomous. I had to look at how to distinguish them. It turns out that one
of the most reliable ways is by (literally!) looking in his/her eyes!
(well, maybe not in, but at...)

Apparently, these species have only 6 eyes, unlike most others that have
8.

Dave,
I hear you. I do similarly, but I kill all mosquitoes and flies.
How do you distinguish female mosquitoes? By the sexy sparkles in the
eyes? ;-)
I know that only female ones buzz and bite, but I treat all mosquitoes
equally. :-)
Most of the time, I also kill what I call "two-tails" (as my parents
called them in my childhood). There are two types of species
that fall under that category: One is usually called earwig
("ear-twister" in Russian), or formally Dermaptera.
The second one is the actual species with the "two-tails" name (in
Russian), which is Diplura, sometimes called in English "two-pronged
bristletails",
Apparently, there are some myths about those (like they target your ears,
etc.) I don't know for sure, but it sounds like they do bite. Often, they
can survive being flooded and sent down the drain in the bath tub, where
they are frequent. So, I usually flush them in the toilet (but
occasionally they stay afloat.
I relocate lizards, and most of the spiders to the outside.

I'm not bothered by spiders in the wild or in a garden.. and I've even
petted a tarantula.. but I confess I kill any I find in my apartment as
brown recluse spiders do live in the city... but I'd be inclined to trap
and release a Daddy Long Legs if one appeared.
