Do you know what file system your New and Photo drives are using? If
they're formatted either FAT or exFAT they should be compatible with
both MAC and Windows machines. Then you could plug the Photo drive into
a Windows machine and see if it's readable.

Cotty,
Sorry this isn't clear. There are 3 external drives in our little
drama: Backup (Time Machine), New, and Photo.
The Mac Mini isn't showing the icons for =any= drives. (The System
Report knows they're there, though).
My venerable MacBook Pro recognizes all three, opens Backup and New,
but can't open Photo.

Two external drives are now connected to my MBP, and are working
normally. The photo drive shows up on my MBP, but won't open, and Disk
Utility tells me (in red) that it can't be un-mounted in order to be
repaired.
In the above para, you mention that the two ext droves are connected to you
MBP, and 'are working normally'.
Yet the photo drive won't open. You don't mention the status of your other
drive (presumable the drive you use for Time Machine?).
Is this second drive working normally? Define 'normal' please :-)
The thing that needs to be ascertained is if the failure is hardware or
software. Points towards a failure of some kind on your photo drive, but can
you confirm that your other drive operates as intended when connected to your
MBP please?
