Yes, of course. I actually tried that, but I liked the way the close crop looked better.
It's a choice, Jack. I know the "rule" and usually agree with it and try to follow it. Sometimes I ignore it. I probably would be a better photographer if I followed the rules more often, but at my age, I'm kind of set in my ways and mostly go with what looks better to me at the time that trying to stick with the rules. It's like the rule of thirds. I agree that following it usually produces a better-balanced image, but often it also allows distractions to remain in the frame, and one must decide how important eliminating the distraction is compare to balancing the image. At other times (like in this instance) I just feel that the subject should dominate the image and fill up as much of the frame as possible. Rules are good, but bad boys don't like to follow the rules. <G> I guess I could claim that filling the frame with the prime subject is part of my "style" to cover up my error, but that would be just a bit of razzle-dazzle. I plead guilty and throw myself on the mercy of the court.
