Hey, no prob. "Form follows function" is supposed to be one of the basic tennants of design, any design. Most "web designers" leave that off, probably because making your own web page is so easy. Especially since the 'net is dotted with vast depositories of cut'n'paste javascript to make your home page as whiz-bang and gaudy as possible. Sort of like those mega fuel stops on the interstate way out in the middle of nowhere, slathered with layers of neon and blazing Taco Bell and McDonalds signs.
The only reason I would do the background fade-thing like our ebay friend here is to make my auction page easier to remember. I know I've looked at three or four of the same item on Ebay and tried to remember which was which. However, if it were my page, I'd keep the fade simple. Say, only over an inch of the left margin instead of over the whole page. That way, visitors can actually READ about what I'm selling. And I wouldn't put all that animated stuff on there. Tacky.
