While I understand all the problems and sympathize to the people experiencing it, the recurrence of them gives me an impression that people have some sort of masochistic pleasure from experiencing these problems.

There is no reason to get stuck with Earthlink, Yahoo, or any others.
Even if you are receiving all your e-mail to that address, One can have a separate account for PDML that would work well with PDML.
And it is easy to setup multiple accounts in Thunderbird.

I'd say Gmail would be a good candidate (even for the people who otherwise wouldn't be using it). But for those who refuse anything G on principle,
gmx.com is a good option.

Another option that I would suggest considering is zoho.com .
They have their own free mail.
Additionally, you can even host your own domain at no cost for hosting
(you can register a domain, say, on name.com for some $10-15 a year), - so that you can use an address like [email protected] .

Yeah, John (and Joe Tainter, too) I'm kind of stuck here since Earthlink can't seem to get themselves out of the spam business. I can't request a whitelist because of their ongoing inability to police their servers. Our host won't go for it, for obvious reasons.

I can still use Earthlink to read messages from PDML, but it looks like I'm stuck using Yahoo if I want to reply to something or post a new message.
