Alan, it *looks* like the same bird but it seems they are different:
"African hoopoe differs from the eurasian hoopoe: male African hoopoe has
richer colour above, it lacks the subterminal white band on the crest, and
has black primaries. they are two separated species" (gleaned from the net)
