The softbox gives more controllable light, but it's bulky when you're not using it, and usually can't be fitted to a shoe-mount type flash, while an umbrella can, with a Manfrotto Lite-Tite. It's good to have both. I've seen umbrellas at discount prices in one of the bins at Henry's on Queen.
