To your question, in this case, I stepped out of the rig (SUV) and
rested the lens on top of the drivers
side door.
Rarely use a tripod and when I do
it's when I'm on an observation
platform and have no intention of
moving for awhile.
I often slip a length of tubular 
styrofoam on the driver's side
window's top edge. Thus, easily adjusted as needed as a lens rest.
