Iao Needle, called Kūkaemoku in the Hawaiian language, is a
vegetation-covered lava remnant rising 1,200 feet from the floor of iao
Valley, in an extinct volcano known as the West Maui Mountains. Its
needle-like appearance is an optical illusion; it is actually a sharp
ridge giving the appearance of a spire when viewed end-on.
