Sometimes your exposure is set for a normal shot, but then something very abnormal comes your way. Like a bird in shadow against a white sky. With digital, you can just fire away and change the exposure in poet without any observable loss of quality. This was shot at ISO 250, f9, 1/800th, which was just right for birds fully lit in a neutral setting. This guy was high up in a tree, shaded and against a white sky. I pulled the trigger and added 3.25 stops of exposure in post, making it approximately ISO 2200. Some contrast and saturation adjustment and then a levels correction, and we were in business. Bluejays are very shy by the way, so I don’t pass one up even in a tough situation.
