I think using new, _non-standard_ format of batteries for [almost] every new

I am glad that almost all DSLRs (except the first 2 or 3?) from Pentax are at
least using the same battery format.
Those 2CR5's were a pain. I was glad that *istDS could take AA's as well.
I had 2CR5 as an emergency spare in the bag, but I was using AA's most of the
time.
The *ist-D used a CR-V3 battery OR standard AA batteries (including
rechargeables), although my experience was you got more endurance from the CR-V3
than from the AA batteries.
I don't remember being able to find any rechargeable CR-V3 batteries while I was
using the *ist-D, and lithium AA batteries didn't become widely available until
later.
Remember how it used to be in late 90-s - earlier 2000's, - that every new cell
phone had a different charger? I am glad that it was narrowed down to two
formats (micro-USB and recently, USB-C), or three-and-a half, if you count that
odd-ball called Apple, that couldn't implement even micro-USB the same way as
the rest of companies did.
I don't remember all the details, but I believe, credits go to EU for demanding
a unified charging format from the cell phone manufacturers.

Not really. Or at least it wasn't a problem. I've never had more than one cell
phone at a time, so I've never had to worry whether the charging cord connectors
were interchangeable.
I got my first cell phone in late 1991 or early 1992; bag-phone style with a
automobile 12v adapter plug & a 120VAC wall wart. Both plugged into the
charging/power port on the phone. IIRC, the battery was an extra cost option on
that first bag phone, but well worth it.
I was a traveling service tech from 1981 - 1994 and carried a company pager from
1982 to 1994. I averaged 120,000 miles per year covering a nominal 34,000 square
mile territory.
I bought the cell phone because pay phones had started disappearing in the early
90s and I couldn't always find one to call the office if they paged me while I
was on the road between customers.
Every one of the cell phones I've had since then came with both an automobile
12v adapter and a 120V wall wart. The form of the connectors on the end of the
cord didn't matter as long as it fit the charging port on the phone that it came
with.
I've had 6 cell phones from 1992 to 2018 (when the iPhone became #7).
With the exception of one flip phone I had to replace because it wouldn't charge
the battery, I've only replaced phones when my provider was bought out by
another company & my existing phone became obsolete.
It was also in the early 80s that I got my first Pentax SLR, an A3000 which I
soon outgrew and traded in for partial credit on a Super Program. By the time I
got my first cell phone I had added a second Super Program, a K1000 SE and an LX.
I am glad we can multiplex chargers between all our phones and tablets, and I
need only two types of USB cables for that. (Until last year, it was only one
format, but than 3 new devices had USB-C, which seems to be
much better, especially since there is no "up" and "down" on the connector.
On this "high note..."...
Cheers,
Igor
