It doesn't really take a lot of luck, just the right equipment in the right place.  I remember swimming in a fresh water lake and the Damselflies were sitting on pretty much every surface and protuberance mating.  I found myself wishing I had my SLR and a waterproof housing to record some images.  At the time I was just a broke graduate student, and couldn't afford a waterproof housing.  A decent macro lens would have been nice too, I suppose.
