When I Holland decades ago, they were selling tulip bulb. Knowing how much
our deer LOVE tulips., we joked about buying "deer food." Instead, we
purchased 8 wooden tulips and brought them home. I painted the tulips
bright color, then put on a coat of shellac. I mounted them on 1/4 inch
dowels, and "planted" them in our front yard, saying "this will make the
neighbors jealous! The next morning, the deer had bitten off all the
tulips, spitting them back out onto the ground! They must have smelled and
tasted horrible, but they could not resist anything that looked like tulips!
