I think tourism is a larger, more reliable source of income for Icelanders, plus
the island being uniquely blessed with an abundance of Eco-friendly, energy
resources (80% "renewable" from geothermal & hydro-power). They only import oil
to meet transportation needs, and like the rest of the world, they're moving
away from that.
That air base seems to be mostly an on-again-off-again proposition, not a
reliable source.
