A couple of weeks ago my daughter and I took a walk in Wissahickon Valley Park
in Philadelphia. Wissahickon Creek was once lined with mills (over 50 in the
1850s), but the city acquired the land as part of its water supply, and it
later became a park. Many of the stone dams and bridges remain; and the gravel
road along the stream is closed to motorized vehicles. Being at the bottom of a
deep forested gorge, it is a lovely place to get away from the city.
