Ann, A few days ago I got an "Out of Office AutoReply" from a corporate email address to a message I sent to PDML. Like you the addressee was not listed in my address book so I don't understand how I could even have accidentally cc'd him. My ISP suggested a virus as the probable cause, and explained that the forwarding addresses can be hidden in the infectious message so that your own address book isn't always the source. I do frequent on-line virus scans at PC Pitstop and a subsequent scan came up clean, but their reference files are only updated once a month so a new virus could slip in during the interval between updates.
Also like you I am super cautious with attachments, I never open one from an unknown sender and frequently reject one from a known sender if the subject line, the size, or the attachments extension are suspicious. That leaves only two infection sources: HTML emails (I get some commercial newsletters and up to now had thought them trustworthy); or directly from Javascript on web pages. I personally know that the second is possible because I once got loaded with "something" that made it impossible to browse one of the Australian auction sites. Only uninstalling and reinstalling Internet Explorer cleaned out that bug. OTOH the list-server might possibly be doing the random forwarding. Was your bounced message also a PDML message? Shel, was your similar event with a PDML message? Has anyone else had something similar lately?
