It's not really a transformer that blows, there's a fused link/circuit breaker
attached to the line the transformer connects to. Tthe power company is driving
around looking for what caused the fuse/circuit breaker to trip out.
They don't want to reset it until they know whatever caused it to trip out has
been fixed.
Fourth of July a few years ago, the power went out around 8 am and I walked
outside to check. I saw one of the fused links down the street was tripped out.
Looking up the street in the other direction I saw the top of one of the power
poles on fire, like a big ol' birthday candle.
Walking up there to get the pole number I found a scorched squirrel down on the
street below the burning power pole.
Called the location (pole number) in to the power company & they sent a truck
out right away. The lineman had to cut off the burnt top of the pole and install
an extension to hold the insulator for the top wire up where it was supposed to go.
Then after that, he went down the street & reset the fused links so we got our
power back.
The other day, I could see what had caused the line to trip & where it was, so
after I called them they didn't have to drive around looking for the cause.
As soon as they removed the part of the pine tree that was hung on the line,
they were able to reset the breakers.

Interesting observations, Dave. I would have though that sort of thing was
confined to the third world. We also have daily, scheduled load shedding apart
from regular faults & cable theft. Thieves are now also targeting backup battery
banks in cell phone towers.

There is a transformer2 doors down from our place. It blows all the time.
When the trucks show up toi investigate we tell them its this transformer
over here. They drive around for an hour or so then eventually come back to
the transformer in question then reset it.:-)

Anyway, I done my good deed for today, had a nice little walk & I'm back
on line.
Great story mate - if only the world had a few more people like you ;-)
