It’s also known as jimsonweed, but that is a different species than this.  I 
first ran across the name thornapple in a wonderful book called “The Blackthorn 
Key” by Kevin Sands.   It’s a historical fiction about an apothecary apprentice 
set in 1665 London.  It’s aimed at at 12-15 year olds, but I absolutely loved 
the way he wove the story around both historical and scientific fact, and as he 
described things, using words I wasn’t familiar with, I would recognize what he 
was doing, and have to check up on the new words to find out that they were 
indeed things I knew about.
