The volcano is dormant.  The last eruption was 225 years ago, and was a
relatively mild flow of lava in a limited are.  It will have another
eruption, sometime in the near or distant future, but it is not a real
hazard.  The Hawai'ian volcanoes are shield volcanoes that can be very
active, like Kilauea on the Big Island, but generally not as dangerous as
composite volcanoes such as Fuji, Mt St Helen's, Etna, and Vesuvius.
People live in relative safety in rather close proximity to Kilauea and
Mauna Loa on the Big Island.
