Exactly. HDR software takes multiple images in 8-bit color (that is, 8 bits per color) and then combines them into an image in 32-bit color. Since our software and monitors can't display anywhere near that kind of color depth, the HDR software then maps the 32-bit color into 8-bit (or 16-bit) space before rendering the final image.
