I agree that the market for film cameras is tiny, me being a member of it! I do frequently shoot with my MZ-S, which is a joy to use, and am dreading the day when it ceases to function: but then I'll fire up either a Spotmatic or an SV, if there is no current model to replace it with. The article makes a point about the small market share that Pentax have- IMHO, this is mainly due to the loss of bricks and mortar camera stores world-wide, and the very heavy emphasis on marketing by Canon and Nikon, who have seemingly been able to convince the media that they are the only professional camera marques, with perhaps Leica and Hasselblad getting an occasional mention. The reduced marketing by Pentax in the past must also share some of the blame- if people don't know what you have, they won't be able to buy your product. I don't think the writer is correct in pushing for a manual emphasis: modern users want the camera to think for them, and the only way for film to be really able to continue is weaning particularly young photo enthusiasts away from their phones.
