So a few months ago LR6 and my catalog began to misbehave badly. LR could no longer count the photos, couldn’t find a bunch of them, and searches were very unreliable.
I updated my OS to Mojave, subscribed to LR Classic, tried replacing chunks of the catalog with backups… nothing worked. I chanced upon a website called LightroomQueen.com. I posted a message laying out the whole sorry history, and asked for advice. The next morning someone had responded, telling me to check that "Library / Show photos in subfolders” was checked. It wasn’t, so I clicked the box to check it. Well, after a few minutes of cyber-thought, the image counts began to reappear. When I looked in the folders, quite a few were greyed out, and I had to right-click and choose “Find missing photos”, then find the corresponding folder on my photo hard drive. That took an hour or so. I have a few things left to import from a few small catalogs I started when the main one was broken, but I’m pretty much back in business.
