Not quicksand - the sand rivers are just like a beach. Animals do
occasionally get stuck in the mud at drying up pans.

A large anthill with a built in timber supply & a typical sand river.
All the tributaries around here look like this in the dry season. The
sand beds can be several metres deep on top of the bedrock. The rivers
still flow below the surface through the sand. Elephants dig wells &
extract the exposed water with their trunks. The pool in this shot is
occupied by a solitary hippo.
