My 5 year old grandson is extremely inquisitive and regularly investigates, among other things, local lizards and insects.  He became interested in butterflies so they bought a cage and acquired a few caterpillars so he could learn about the whole metamorphosis process.  He watched as they went from caterpillar to cocoon to, finally, the first emerging butterfly.  When it was ready they released that first butterfly and he watched it soar away.  As it reached the height of their rooftop a bird swooped down, snatched it up and immediately flew away giving him a hard lesson in the circle of life.

Thanks, Henk, Ann and David!

I am sure they do not recognize me; they just hang on for dear life to
anything solid until their wings are dry and strong enough to fly. I take
them to a milkweed or butterfly bush and gently force them to grab onto a
leaf or seed pod. There was a newly emerged monarch in one of the cages
this morning. He was pretty strong, and as soon as I opened my hand, he
flew high into the air and settled on a nearby cedar. Another emerged
while I was out walking the dog. After breakfast, I coaxed him from his
perch onto my hand. He held on so tightly I could feel him gripping the
skin of my hand. It took a few minutes to coax him onto a milkweed, but
that allowed me to grab a few images of him on my hand and on the bush.
The three larvae on the bush on my deck are getting really fat; I think
they will start creating their chrysalises soon.

Dan, beautiful creatures and great colors.
It looks as if they recognize you have raised them!

Two more images from recent Monarch releases. I find it a bit tricky to
operate the camera with one hand while holding the other hand steady for
the butterfly.
