I thought he was smiling in the first shot  too :-)  but if he was pacing before I suspect a frown would be more appropriate  Poor guy

I am not sure we can really read emotions of turtles from their faces. I suspect it is antropomorphism speaking in us.

(which was literally a minute a part from the other shot).

This big guy was actually running around in the area of at least 60x60 ft. He/she was pacing back and forth along the wire-fence perimeter, and, just before the photo was taken, ended his/her lap, turning to the fence.

I forgot to mention that the photo was taken with K-1 & Tamron 70-300
at 300 mm (uncropped).
