P.J., this is an interesting image that caught my eye when you posted the
first version, and now, I am looking at both.
I am not quite sure which of the two I like better.
The newer, "circular" version has more of the "caricature" feel to it.
It feels as if it us the (mini-) globe, and the water is flowing off from
the top - to both sides (and not just to the big "crater".
I like that type of effect. - That's fun!
(I've experimented with a similar view of a flower meadow.)
The first, semi-circular, version draws more attention to the giant
sinkhole/crater, in which the water rushes from otherwise (seemingly)
mostly calm and flat surface.
(And it doesn't even feel that much of a fish-eye, until you start
analyzing the image.)
This seems to be an overall more powerful image.
