We have insulation on the roof and in the attic, but I guess we could always use more. The classic sign of insufficient insulation is when the snow on the roof melts away quickly, due to heat from the attic. We still have a heavy layer of snow all over our roof, even on the southern side.
When the sun comes out, It melts some of the ice on the roof, and the slow run-off forms these icicles.
