I tried to follow Larry's advice and throw some light on the icicles so I could photograph them at night, thus eliminating the distracting background. Since I couldn't get out on the deck to aim a light on the icicles, I just turned on the light that is on the upper deck, and grabbed what I could. These are the best two of the exposures I managed in the middle of the night. Obviously, a lot more work is needed:
