One of the defining characteristics of Ranunculids (buttercups) is that their petals have a smooth, reflective surface, which is not common in other flowering plants. Hypotheses for the presence of this surface range from an extra attractant to pollinating insects to a heat regulating mechanism for the reproductive organs. In other words, nobody knows....
