OK I decided to have another look at the rendering and I've been learning a lot more about Adobe Camera Raw in the process.
I've boosted the exposure a bit, tweaked the colour and applied some (well, a lot of) noise reduction, masking out the areas where I wanted to keep fine detail. I've also toned down the white background highlights a little. I am absolutely loving the adjustment brush tool. It would be nice to have Photoshop-style selection tools but I think I can cope.
