The legend is cute, but of course, there were no dogwood trees in the Holy Land 2,000 years ago. Dogwoods are endemic to Eastern North America, and only very recently have they been exported to other countries.
The colorful white, pink, or red of the dogwood trees are not petals or flowers, but "bracts." What the legend refers to as the center of the flower is indeed the entire flower.
