Saying this is a “new” project may be a bit of a stretch. When the shut-downs
and stays-at-home began a year ago, I decided to take on a project I had long
mulled over, a series of Blurb books of photos from our travels over the last
20 years or so.

My first Blurb was back in 2007 following time spent in and around Venice. I
did a few family projects (e.g., a book of my father-in-law’s slides of the
family from when Meg and her siblings were quite young). And I edited/produced
a couple of books documenting two church mission trips to Costa Rica, 2008 and
2010. Then I retired and we started a different form of travel, mostly cruising
with extended visits to a region before and/or after a cruise.

I didn’t get around to doing a book after our first cruise in 2013. Then we did
another in 2014 that covered some of the same destinations. Then 2015 in South
America, 2016 was Alaska, many other destinations before and since. Easter
Island, Machu Picchu, Galapagos, Jerusalem, Naples, Venice, Florence, London,
Rio, Stockholm… So my fundamental dilemma was an over abundance of images, no
obvious thread to link together the shots from site A with site B with site C…
One book per trip? Boring. Early on I did consciously emphasize a few themes:
doorways; street signs; architectural details of older buildings; passers-by;
and postcard style scenics (broad landscapes, harbors, etc.) But I didn’t want
to do a Doorway book or a street sign book etc. Maybe someday, but for me right
now those images are pleasing within the context of the locale where I spotted
them.

So, early last April I decided to do a series based on region. First up was to
be the Caribbean. We had spent a week in St. Maarten in 2002, then had been
back to many islands throughout the region on cruises between 2013 through
2018. I realized that it didn’t make any difference what year I took that shot
of the school boy on Front Street in Philipsburg, didn’t matter which trip I
was on. Etc. Thus the challenge I set myself was to find 20± images which would
capture each island. Or at least images that would capture my recollection of
those islands. I was well along, making progress, when our home was hit by a
major flood late May last year. The rebuilding has been a bit of a distraction.
But a month or two ago I got back to work on the project.

The Book arrived today.

        1. I am well pleased.
        2. Meg is in the other room super excited to see the images.
        3. The book grew a bit beyond my original intent, which means...
        4. The book would be expensive for anyone to buy.

However!

        5. Blurb offers an option to purchase/download a pdf version; much more
reasonable price.

And even better!

        6. I triggered the button to allow interested parties to see an
unlimited Preview. Anyone with the link can go and do an online Preview of the
whole book.

Some cold and stormy night, settle in with an adult beverage, click on the
link, and take a virtual trip to a warm sunny fun place. I hope you enjoy it.
