Interesting shot and write up. I never thought much about container
ships till recently.

Sniffing around the web, I learned that San Diego is Dole's largest terminal,
with four smaller ones on the Gulf and East coasts. Dole owns about 20
refrigerated container ships (each container has its own chiller, using power
from the ship); each ship carries about 300 containers. Most carry bananas,
while others carry pineapples. Other fruit companies lease container space and
ships rather than owning a fleet.
These are unusual for container ships, because they have their own cranes
(Central American port facilities are apparently not relaible that way). This
ship was unloading containers with the front crane at the same time as the rear
crane was loading empties.
More that you ever wanted to know, right? I think I’ll have a banana with my
tea…
