Today is the 246th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. This is an image of The United States Marine Corps War Memorial from a few years ago:
http://dan-matyola.squarespace.com/danmatyolas-pesos/2021/11/10/z18fcra9p605ailjapitlklrg5cuiugraph Today I am especially remembering Sgt. Michael Strank, a Rusyn American (like me) who was the leader of the Marines who raised the flag and were in the iconic photo on which the memorial was based. He is the figure that is not holding the flag, but is supporting two of his men who are raising the flagpole. Strank turned down a battlefield commission because he didn't want to abandon the Marines he had shepherded through training and the first days of the battle for Iwo Jima. He was killed on March 1, 1945 on Iwo by friendly artillery fire. He was only 25. On January 13, 1949, his remains were reinterred in Grave 7179, Section 12, Arlington National Cemetery. Semper Fi !
