Thanks Bill - the inspiration for that shot was actually a couple of VanGogh's self portraits. I had been to the VanGogh / Gauguin exhibit in Chicago the week before taking that portrait,and was impressed by Van Gogh's motif of putting himself in front of a background that was reminiscent of his paintings - and actually incorporating the elements of the background into himself. I was thinking in particular of this one:
