Looking up ISPS, I find International Ship and Port Security. I guess I don’t get the joke…
ISPS is no joke. Far from it. It was forced upon the world by the U.S. in the aftermath of 9/11. While we could drive, walk and photograph everywhere in European sea ports for many years, they've now been turned into some kind of high-security prisons. Fences, CCTV and security patrols now make them the most forbidding (and forbidden) places. It is now easier for a normal citizen to legally go to the moon than into a port under ISPS rules. The Belgian minister for North Sea affairs has just suggested raising the penalty for illegal entry into an ISPS area to 15 years. That's what the average murderer gets in Belgium. With the exception of a few glossy pics from their PR departments, following generations will never know what a sea port looks like from the inside. Has there ever been an attempt to hijack a vessel in Europe and ram it into the Statue of Liberty? Patently not. So, what's the point of the exercise? Our politicians have 'done something' and the suppliers of fences, CCTV equipment and the whole "security industry" are making a fortune. Now, have another look at the photo: an unused jetty 'protected' by a solid metal gate and the threat of a prison sentence. There's nothing there to protect. Methinks that's plain stupid.
