Probably taken by marauding African swallows, who bury them at the foot of palm 
trees as an over-winter supply. It’s quite common here to see flights of 
African swallows circling over the pier at dusk in large murmurations, laden 
with overripe carved pumpkins, sometimes one in each foot.
