Everybody has their own way of organizing their Lightroom Catalog. I would strongly recommend that the files themselves are organized in a manner that makes photos relatively easy to find without using lightroom. I don’t know for sure, but I strongly suspect that the catalog format is OS independent, so long as the file trees are compatible.
