Theft of Turtle eggs on the Natal north coast & Mozambique coast at
night has become a big problem, difficult to stop because the coastlines
are so long. Popular egg laying beaches are now under 24hr security. The
"nests" are also fenced off so the hatchlings cannot get to the sea.
They are collected and transported for release beyond the breakers to
circumvent the initial carnage by predators.

Maui, at least, the green sea turtles frequently rest on shore, often in
the sun. There are loggerheads and other turtles offshore here, but they
do not come on to the beach, and I believe most of them lay their eggs in
the uninhabited islands at the northwest of the Hawai'ian chain. Green
turtle lay eggs in m any areas here on Maui.
