I actually have played both kinds :-) and a Dictaphone, too.
I played a soprano and alto recorder back in the early 60's .. by ear..
never read music
I took it up again when I got ashley - she seemed to like it

Which reminds me of the typical response of a German who doesn't play
any instrument and who, when asked, will claim he plays the grammophone.
Over here, a recorder is either a tape or cassette recorder and your
instrument is a 'Blockfloete', literally a block flute.
