Damn! ..
I never met him in person but he wrote a blurb for my book Sign Language in 1992 .. that never got used because he was out of the country when he got the photos .. he sent the quote in to my editor (one of his, of course) saying  "if it's not too late, here's a quote for you"  I scanned the postcard and used it on the back of the "sequel"  to Sign Language "Signs Gone By" that I self published a couple of years ago.  But there were other connections too,and another missed op to meet him in person at the Leica gallery here.  Had connections to him through other friends of mine.. one a cinematographer he worked with whose wife was a close friend of mine and Erwitt gave them a very large print of his wife and baby that is in the Family of Man... Another friend's son accepted Erwitt's photos for dental work and  a little place called Reubens that sold empanadas near where I worked in Soho back in the 90's was lined with his photos - Owner was a friend of EE.

Oddly, the day he died (yesterday)  I had just commented on instagram on a street photographer's photo of a man holding his dog and they looked like each other .. the street photographer was someone I met recently who by coincidence had just been look at my book in a little park in Brooklyn and had told Fernando a photo of his reminded me of one of Erwitt's.

I guess his getting to 95 makes it less sad..    I just now saw the Times obit.. published on-line 3 hours ago.

has died, unfortunately. I met him once after a fascinating and very amusing
talk he gave at the National Portrait Gallery in London. He very generously
signed a copy of his book Manwatching for me - in Russian - I’d brought it
along hoping he’d do that for me so I could give it to a Russian friend.

His photos have always been an inspiration. Today I happened to be at the Leica
Gallery in London for the Emily Garthwaite exhibition. Just before I left I
noticed someone else, who had been drooling at Leicas, leave then immediately
come back in. As far as I could tell he’d caught sight of something he couldn’t
understand and needed to check. It was Erwitt’s photo of a man in NYC with the
head of a bulldog, and he left again with his shoulders heaving with laughter.
