Too tired to get deep into this discussion, but I'll throw
this in:  Yeah, "portrait" to refer to animals sounds a 
little off in general, but when you're trying to capture a
_specific_ animal's distinct personality, especially if 
it's a part of someone's family, it starts seeming to make
a bit more sense.  I straddle the fence on this by using
the word "petrait" (which, alas, I cannot claim to have made
up).  It conveys the portrait aspect while acknowledging the
non-human/is-it-really-a-portrait aspect.
