Wait a second.  If there are spaces for them on the display, in that directory, 
then they are in lightroom. It just isn't showing previews.

If you click on library-> find all missing photos 
do they list as missing?

If you select them then click on library->previews->smart previews (or standard 
previews) 
do the previews for them show up?

If you double click on one of the grey squares, what happens?
