My grandfather was one of those early HAMs, too. Started some time in
the 1920s. Talked about building the early radios by winding tuning
coils on oatmeal boxes. Taught code to Army Air Corp radio operators in
WW 2.

I never did get my ticket. My grampa, who was a member of the Society
of Wireless Pioneers, would help me practice my code, but when I got
home from visits, I couldn't get my parents to help me practice to get
up to 5 wpm. On the other hand, one of my first "words" was CQ.
